NSEA has launched the Respect Educators Act to elevate the safety, well-being, and autonomy of all educators in their work. To this end, we have requested an amendment to the restorative justice process to include real accountability for any violence committed against educators and provide educators with the tools necessary to deal with disruptive behavior. We believe there needs to be a new focus on restorative justice to create processes that can be effective.
To assist in this work, NSEA has proposed the creation of a restorative practices monitoring committee that includes educators from across the state (including licensed professionals and education support professionals), legislators, and NDE to gain a clear understanding of the impact of the laws, ensure consistent implementation, and secure protection for all students and educators.
NSEA is amenable to either the Restorative Justice Monitoring Committee or the Advisory Committee on the Safety and Well-being of Educators to advance this important work.
