Today, the Nevada State Education Association mourns for our country.  The basic promise of the United States is that regardless of race, gender, wealth, or zip code you can succeed and pursue a better future. That promise was nowhere to be found yesterday. Instead, that promise is in jeopardy because President Trump and his allies have refused to accept the will of the people from the November election. The refusal to accept a free and fair election has endangered American lives and our democratic institution.

Yesterday, our students witnessed the loss of life, destruction of federal property, and an assault on democracy.

In order to protect and restore our democratic institution, the Nevada State Education Association is calling for the immediate removal of Donald Trump from the office of the President.

Yesterday’s events were not the first incident incited by President Trump and his allies, but they were the most violent, most anti-Nevadan, and most anti-American yet.  Both State and Federal law expressly forbids educators & other public employees from advocating for the overthrow of the United States Government. Tragically, our current President incited a mob to do just that and must be held accountable.

In November, thousands of educators voted because public education was on the ballot. We voted for new leadership so we could get back to addressing the priorities that impacted us the most such as adequate education funding, the need for COVID relief, and racial and social justice. Our leaders deserve the ability to address these issues for educators without a destructive backdrop created by the President and his allies.

Moments like this are why we are educators. Now, we must come together to show our students that we will stand united against those who incite violence as well as those who take part in it. Our children are looking to see what we do to protect them, to educate them, and guide them. We are privileged to have the opportunity to shape society by working with students as they grow and develop their values and world views. Our children are watching. Let's stand together and stand up for Democracy.
