NSEA supports SB374 to provide educators with professional development on the discipline and behavior of pupils.

Published: April 10, 2025

NSEA has a long history of engagement on the issue of educator safety and student disciplinary practice. We spearheaded the creation of the progressive student discipline system decades ago and supported AB285 last session as a commonsense proposal to help ensure educator and school safety, balancing a system of progressive discipline with a framework of restorative justice. However, a lack of resources to properly implement student discipline, including training for educators, has hamstrung smooth implementation of the system. This was especially the case with the failed implementation of the restorative justice system 5 years ago.

SB374 is an important step toward addressing this shortcoming, and we ask for your support.
