More than one in eight Nevadans rely on federal food assistance. In some rural counties and urban neighborhoods, that number is even higher. Educators see this hunger crisis every day. We know that meals are more than food; they’re fuel for learning. You can’t expect a student to focus on math or reading when their stomach is empty. Meanwhile, many educators themselves struggle with food insecurity. In an internal member survey, more than 13% of classified school employees in Nevada reported receiving SNAP benefits.
This month, Nevada has felt the impact of a sudden interruption in federal SNAP benefits. This has caused hardship for families and communities and stressed Nevada’s emergency food distribution system. In addition to supporting this system, it is critical for the state to have the ability to meet any future crisis head-on, by giving Nevadans the emergency support they need. NSEA is proud to support the creation of the Silver State General Assistance Program.
