Educators are committed to the success and well-being of our students. School social workers play an essential role in addressing the social and emotional needs of students, serving as a bridge between students, families, and the school community. Their presence and contributions at a school site are instrumental in helping students thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
School social workers are essential for student mental health, addressing emotional difficulties, trauma, and stress. They engage students and staff to address bullying, promote conflict resolution skills, and advocate for a culture where every student feels safe. School social workers also serve as a liaison between students, families, and the school, helping to identify and address external factors that may be affecting a student's ability to succeed. By engaging with families and connecting them to resources in the community, school social workers help ensure that students have the support they need both at home and at school. When crises occur, school social workers provide immediate emotional support to students and staff. They help students process traumatic events, manage stress, and rebuild a sense of safety.
NSEA supported SB319 in 2019 to establish the duties of school counselors, social workers, and psychologists and to require public schools to employ a school counselor to the extent funds are available. NSEA believes the addition of school social workers is merited and asks for your support.
