Memo: NSEA Supports AB64 With Amendment (2017)

NSEA supports AB 64 and seeks an amendment to make the legislation retroactive, so that former students with disabilities, who would have met the new diploma criteria, benefit.
Published: February 15, 2017

Many of our members work directly with students with disabilities and are central in the development and implementation of individualized education programs. We care about all of our students and want every opportunity for students with disabilities to be productive members of society. It is important for students with disabilities to receive a standard high school diploma if they meet academic standards and the requirements of their individualized education programs. This accommodation will be a great benefit to these students, enhancing their ability to attain meaningful employment after high school.

Retroactivity would allow students with disabilities who previously met the requirements of their individualized education program to attain a high school diploma, opening up significant opportunities that are now closed to them
