It is no secret that Nevada educators are overworked and underpaid. The burdens on the teaching profession are significant, and there is really no way for teachers to do all that is required within their contract hours. While there are legitimate concerns about the use of artificial intelligence, prohibiting this tool from helping teachers create and refine lesson plans is the wrong way to go.
A quick query on ChatGPT will produces many of the ways in which artificial intelligence can help teachers with lesson planning. In addition to generating lesson plans based on topics, grade levels, and learning objectives, artificial intelligence can:
- personalize learning, suggesting differentiated instruction strategies
- recommend modifications for students with different learning styles or needs
- generate quizzes, flashcards, and interactive exercises to reinforce learning
- help with scheduling lessons, aligning with curriculum standards, and tracking progress
- recommend relevant articles, videos, and teaching materials based on the topic
- suggest gamified learning experiences to keep students motivated
- help teachers organize these materials into a coherent plan
NSEA asks for an amendment to this bill, and we look forward to participating in many discussions about the appropriate uses of artificial intelligence in our schools.
