Key Takeaways

  1. There has never been a candidate for Governor with such a lifetime commitment to public schools and a quality public education for every Nevada student,” said NSEA President Ruben Murillo, Jr.

(Reno, NV)-- As women across the country marched under the banner of “Power to the Polls”, the Nevada State Education Association (NSEA) unanimously endorsed special education teacher, education union president, and accomplished legislator Christina “Chris G” Giunchigliani to become Nevada’s first woman and first public-school teacher in 40 years for Governor.

Chris Giunchigliani has fought for our public-school kids for more than four decades. Starting as a special education teacher in the late 70’s, Giunchigliani earned her Master’s Degree in 1978 at UNLV. Chris served as the President of the Clark County Classroom Teachers Association from 1983-1987 and founded the Teachers Health Trust, one of the nation’s first teacher-controlled health trusts in the country. She served as NSEA President from 1987-1991, where she led the statewide unification of teachers and education support professionals under the NSEA umbrella. In her 16 years in the Nevada State Assembly, Giunchigliani was a relentless advocate for public education, leading the effort to pass mandatory kindergarten.

“There has never been a candidate for Governor with such a lifetime commitment to public schools and a quality public education for every Nevada student,” said NSEA President Ruben Murillo, Jr. “As a special education teacher in Clark County, I was recruited into the union by Chris G when she was the union President in 1988. Chris G was a leading voice for public education then, and she has never stopped her advocacy for public schools and our students. NSEA is 100% committed in making sure Chris Giunchigliani becomes our Education Governor.”

The number of women running for office in 2018 has smashed all records, and it is only appropriate that Nevada’s leading candidate is a strong woman and public education champion. “I'm honored to earn NSEA's support because they trust I'll always make public education a top priority,” said Chris Giunchigliani speaking from the Las Vegas women’s march on Sunday. “NSEA has been fighting for our public schools for over 100 years. It has been my honor to be a part of that history. Working together, we will win this Governor’s race and finally generate the political will to improve Nevada schools, so every student gets a high-quality public education.”
