NSEA to Move Forward with Ballot Initiative
The NSEA Board of Directors has unanimously voted to support moving forward with a ballot initiative which would increase the tax on gaming revenue of the largest casinos in Nevada. This additional tax revenue will be dedicated solely to K-12 public education.
"There is nothing more important than increasing your salary, benefits, and improving your working conditions and our students’ learning conditions,” said NSEA President Lynn Warne. "We have chosen to stand to make a difference and we will not quietly submit to the idea that there is nothing we can do.”
The goal of the initiative is to add an additional 3% tax on gaming revenues of the largest casinos in Nevada. The revenue generated by this tax would go directly to public K-12 education in Nevada to improve the professional lives of all educators and students.
After gathering the necessary signatures, the initiative will initially appear on the ballot in November 2008. Since the initiative calls for a constitutional amendment, it will need to be on the ballot again in 2010.
