Horace Mann Donates to Help Projects

Including a project in Las Vegas

DENVER (July 9, 2014) –The Horace Mann Companies donated more than $3,000 to help complete projects at the National Education Association Expo in Denver, Colorado last week.   Fifteen teachers will soon have new supplies for their classrooms now that their projects are fully funded. Horace Mann, an insurance company Founded by Educators for Educators®, has donated more than $2 million to projects since partnering with the website in 2011. is a website connecting teachers to donors.

The projects funded include fluorescent light shields, composition notebooks and pencils, sight word puzzles, boards and cards, a classroom carpet, foam balls and games and activities to use with a SmartBoard. The supplies requested will enhance learning and are supplies teachers may not be able to get through their regular school budgets.

Kindergarten teacher Lori-Ann Diaz requested a puppet theater, stands and puppets in her project post.  “Using puppets is a great way to bring more reticent or shy children out of their shells, and to help everyone become more expressive,” says Diaz, who teaches at Cynthia Cunningham Elementary School in Las Vegas, Nevada. “When a child operates a puppet, the focus is on the puppet, rather than on the puppeteer, and the child forgets to be self-conscious. Kids often have difficulty expressing their emotions and information about themselves. The use of puppets in the classroom is a great way for teachers to gather information about their students.”

“These donations highlight our dedication to the whole school.  We want to support superintendents, administrators, principals, teachers and students, and our partnership with allows us to do that,” says Horace Mann’s Assistant Vice President of Educator Alliance Marlene Muncy.
